Sockeye Salmon
The Best Pound-for-Pound Fighter

Sockeye Salmon
Fishing

Known for their incredible acrobatics and unmatched table fare, Sockeye (Red) Salmon are the most sought-after fish in Alaska. Millions return to the Kenai and Kasilof rivers every summer.

How We Catch Them

Sockeye Salmon don't actively feed once they enter the freshwater rivers. To catch them, we use a specialized technique known as "flossing."

  • The Flossing Technique: We drift a weighted fly close to the bank where Sockeye travel in massive schools.
  • The Fight: Sockeye are notoriously strong. They will jump, tail-walk, and strip line off your reel.
  • Limits: The limit is typically 3 per day, but ADF&G often raises it to 6 when counts are high.
